TerraStar Genus is a new smartphone that just announced by AT&T and TerraStar. What makes TerraStar Genus so special is that whenever the AT&T network is not available Genus can hook up to satellite to provide you with coverage anywhere in the US using their all-IP network solution. Speaking of satellietes… the device also has embedded GPS receiver.
The TerreStar Genus smartphone combines GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA terrestrial wireless capability with satellite voice and data capability in a standard smartphone. It runs on WinMo OS, has a 2.6″ touchscreen, WiFi, Bluetooth and as we just mentioned – GPS.
AT&T is currently targeting government, energy, utility, transportation and maritime users with TerraStar Genus which should be available first quarter of 2010. The good news is that they are also working on a device for consumers.
